<image:title>About - “Teams of Machu Picchu’s builders must have dragged each rough-hewn stone at an agonizing pace, lugging it along the ground with fiber ropes. Sometimes the stones were so heavy, they were abandoned in a field. But the men were not punished, rather, the Incas preferred to "blame” the rocks, calling them saycuscai – weary stones.”</image:title>

<image:title>Newsletter April 5th - Spring Clean Up</image:title>
<image:caption>All the little shelters you left for wildlife in the fall should be cleaned up now, especially if you’re direct seeding. Slugs love to hide under leaves, rocks, and other debris left on the ground and you’ll need to be vigilant in keeping slugs away from new seedlings. Now is also prime time to get a jump on your weeds. Temperatures are cool enough that many seeds won’t yet germinate and weeds are still semi-dormant. Getting the little starts out now will help keep weeds from multiplying once the weather warms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter April 5th - Cover Crops – What you can start right now</image:title>
<image:caption>Some annual clovers, vetch, and other legumes can be started right now. When using cover crops you’ll want to consider your goals, timing of sowing and harvest, and cultural conditions. One of my favorite flowers, and a great cover crop to start right now, is Phacelia tanacetifolia, or Lacy Phacelia. They have gorgeous feathery flowers in a bluish lavender and ferny foliage attractive to ladybugs. In addition to attracting pollinators and other beneficial insects, their roots do an incredible job of softening and conditioning the top few inches of soil in a new bed. This feature makes them an excellent first crop before you try putting in annual vegetables. They can be weedy however, so if you don’t want them reseeding all over your garden you’ll want to cut or till them before they’re in full flower so they don’t go to seed. Sometimes in new areas I like allowing them to seed out to “upgrade” my weeds and get something more beneficial into the seed bank.</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter April 5th - Dormant Pruning</image:title>
<image:caption>There is still time to prune back your perennials, shrubs and vines while they’re dormant. Raspberries, grapes, perennial herbs and other berries often need some spring pruning for productivity and longevity. With perennial herbs like oregano, lavender or rosemary I like to do a hard prune once new growth begins to appear. Lavender especially benefits from a hard prune in late winter and late summer, to prevent the accumulation of old wood which is very porous and attracts rot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper Summary - Front Yard</image:title>
<image:caption>They have the start of a great garden out front and made some excellent choices for a variety of color and plant styles. They would like to expand on the work they started by taking out more of the grass and adding more ornamentals and edibles to offer color and interest throughout the year. For spring and early summer color there are alyssum, evergreen, peonies, huckleberry and more could be added to fill in the open spaces. Mint and lilies have summer interest and color, and more lilies as well as zinnias or dahlias could be added to get from summer to frost. For fall and winter interest Alex and Harper already have rosemary and hellebore, as well as a wormwood, whose gray-green foliage adds color all year round. They have a root slayer shovel they like to use to remove grass, and Alex mentioned hiring someone to do that for them since it is tiring work. Sheet mulching is also a good way to add to the garden space and remove more grass. Interest can also be added with different heights and layers of plants, from a groundcover layer all the way up to trees and shrubs. With the shade around the north and west edges of the front garden, there is plenty of potential to add natives that would be easy to care for and offer structure for the smaller ornamentals.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper Summary - Side Yard</image:title>
<image:caption>The side yard gets lots of sun and has southern exposure, so it is a good place for growing edibles. However the space is a bit unorganized, with overgrown strawberry plants, a patch of grass where strawberries aren’t thriving, and a rose that is infected with both black spot and anthracnose. Although the rose has gorgeous flowers during the summer and is nice to look at through the window, it may be happier in another spot where it has a bit more space and could be admired from all sides. If the rose were moved from that spot there would be more room for blueberries or other perennial edibles. Harper installed a small raised bed made with an old dresser drawer, but the wood veneer is peeling and the drawer is falling apart. A new, sturdy raised bed would do well in the spot where the drawer is now, and could offer about 12-20 square feet of space for annual vegetables or fruits. The strawberries need to be cleared of grass and an edge put in between the side yard bed and the gravel path. The spot where the strawberries are dying out needs to have grass removed and another carefree edible put in its place.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper Summary - Back Yard</image:title>
<image:caption>Alex and Harper want the space under the cherry tree to remain without many edibles. It is already a lovely sitting area, and could be made much more welcoming with some pavers connecting it into the deck of the house and creating a line toward the bed on the east side of the garage. With the cherry tree and the addition of the plum and fig trees in the back yard, that space will become more shady as years pass, so the tree circles should be allowed to grow and the grass area can slowly shrink to accomodate the tree canopies. As in the front, some of the shrubs are a bit close to the building structures and need thinning and lightening in order to stay in excellent health. The grass pad on the south side of the pathway in back will remain as is, to accomodate the school bus/ RV conversion they plan to purchase.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper Plan - Front Yard Plan</image:title>
<image:caption>We recommend adding more lilies and hellebores, as well as filling the space with more alyssum and other low growing plants such as creeping thyme or stonecrop, in order to keep weeds at bay. Also a layer of arborist chips should be placed after all the planting is done. The sod will need to be removed and carted away, either with the root slayer shovel or a sod cutter. Once the grass is gone, native such as Nootka rose, Oregon grape, starflower and a variety of ferns can be added in addition to more flowers to fill the space and add color for a cottage garden with West Seattle flair. Given their interest in growing herbs, a simple herb spiral would add character as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper Plan - Gravel Paths & Metal Edging</image:title>
<image:caption>We recommend using metal or other non-organic material for edging the paths in front, then installing a small (1/4” or less) sharp gravel on top of sand for the paths. Arborist chips are a good choice to save money, however they need to be replenished every year or so, whereas gravel will last for years before needing to be added again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper Plan - Front Yard Budget Installation</image:title>
<image:caption>The budget installation would include edging and arborist chips but omit the gravel paths. Plants could be obtained by digging and dividing, purchasing from home sales or other small scale sales over time, saving money but adding time to get everything filled up. Irrigation could also be omitted but hand watering would need to be done regularly. Arborist chips can be acquired for free but there is usually a wait of days or weeks. They can also be purchased in bulk from most soil suppliers, as well as other types of wood chips or bark that have been processed and sold especially for mulching.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper Plan - Side Yard Plan</image:title>
<image:caption>The strawberries would be cleared of grass and the spot where the strawberries are dying out would have grass removed and miner’s lettuce and / or wintergreen put in its place. Miner’s lettuce is a beautiful Pacific Northwest native edible that does well in shade and spreads readily, making a pretty spring border or groundcover for an undisturbed spot. Wintergreen has evergreen foliage and red berries in winter. The dresser drawer raised bed would be replaced at a cost of between $400-$900, depending on design and materials selected. The rose would be either removed entirely or transplanted to a more suitable spot where it isn’t taking up prime real estate for edible plants. There are a few spots in the back and front yard with plenty of sun where it could be placed near a path or window where its sight and scent could be enjoyed. If the rose is to be removed rather than transplanted.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alex and Harper's DIY - Front Yard</image:title>
<image:caption>Do-It-Yourself The first step will be to remove the grass, then prep planting beds with compost and soil if needed. Place taller plants at the back or in the center, with shorter plants at the edges or close to paths. A path or series of paths will need to be edged and laid with gravel, and pavers or stepping stones placed if desired. Before plants go in but once other structures are in place, irrigation will need to be installed. Above ground tubing is recommended and easy to install, fed by any spigot that will attach to a hose. Once the garden spaces are prepped, paths are built, and irrigation is installed, plants can be put in the ground. Process Once path and bed spaces are determined, measurements will be taken and material amounts can be calculated. Depending on the amount of material needed it will be purchased by the bag or by the truckload and loaded in from the back by wheelbarrow. Trenches will be dug for edging, edging installed, then sand and gravel for the paths. If pavers are desired they will be placed after the sand and gravel. Once the paths, edges, and beds are ready the irrigation can be installed. This can be soaker hoses or irrigation tubing, but tubing is more durable and easier to work with over time even though the installation is more labor intensive. We highly recommend automating irrigation as much as possible, and it can be done by a layperson without much trouble. You will want to give your new plants about an inch of water per week during the growing season, including rainfall. Native plants have lower water needs once established, and can be weaned down to once a month over two-three years. After all the irrigation is installed plants can be put in, and you can enjoy your garden!</image:caption>

<image:title>Newsletter April 12 - A Spring Find</image:title>
<image:caption>We’ve been using free arborist chips for years as sheet mulching between our beds, both for weed control and as path material. We allowed some Prunella vulgaris, aka heal all or self heal, to spread around one of our beds as an edge and morels appeared underneath it this year, discovered by our crew member Alaina! True morels are hollow inside and connected to the stem at the bottom, while the caps of false morels are connected at the top and are not hollow but contain a cottony substance inside the stem.</image:caption>

<image:title>Weary Stone Home - About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>Katie and family moved into the new Weary Stone Gardens property in summer 2022, after husband and partner Brent’s sudden passing. Their shared dream of building a beautiful, edible, backyard oasis aligned with the local landscape is expanding and evolving on the new property, inspired by Brent’s memory and aligned with the calling of uncertain times. Through the births of their children, day jobs and the various responsibilites of daily life, the dream continues to take shape.</image:caption>
